H. van Raalte, was an Australian artist and printmaker. Van Raalte was born in 1881 in Lambeth, London, to an English mother and a Dutch father. He received his education at the City of London School, the Royal Academy, and later in Belgium and the Netherlands. In addition to having a painting displayed at the Royal Academy exhibition that year, he was elected an associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers that same year. Even though he was just 21 years old, full-page reproductions of an etching and a dry-point by van Raalte appeared in Modern Etching and Engraving, published by the Studio in London, in 1902. These works were extremely professional and assured, despite his young age. He moved to Western Australia in 1910 and established an art school in Perth. He produced a lot of etchings and aquatints, frequently using gum trees as the subject, although it took some time for his work to gain recognition in the eastern states. In 1919, he held a show of his art in Perth; it was followed by another in Adelaide. He was named curator of the Adelaide Art Department in 1921, and his position was modified to curator of the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1922. Following involvement by Sir William Sowden, head of the Gallery's board, in the hanging of what Van Raalte deemed "bad art," he resigned in January 1926. He built a studio there and spent the final three years of his life there, in Second Valley, South Australia.Framed Prints come with Certificate of Authenticity.
