The 'Rexonola' tale starts in 1906 when two young men named S. J. Jackson and D. S. MacDonald settled down in Ash Street after securing the only Edison phonograph franchise in the entire city. After six years of selling Edison's, they were ready to start producing their own machines locally in 1912. Their 'Rexonola' gramophones eventually became Australia's top brand, and 'Jackson & MacDonald' the biggest phonograph maker in the Australian Commonwealth. In Australia and New Zealand, "Rexonolas" were extensively available, and by 1926, shipment inside the British Empire was planned. An estimated 180,000 units of production are thought to have been produced between 1912 and 1929. The company produced an outstanding range of high-quality "talking machines" throughout the first three decades of the 20th century under the brands "Rexophone," "Rexonola," and "Rexoport."
