Grimwades Limited, located in Stoke-on-Trent, developed Royal Winton, an English brand of earthenware and fine bone china dinnerware, in 1885 by Leonard Lumsden Grimwade and his elder brother, Sidney Richard Grimwade. Each piece is labelled with either a name or both. Among many other subjects, the business created pieces with a New Zealand focus, some of which were aimed at the local market. The first of their Chintz pattern designs, for which the firm has become famous, was created in 1928. Coloroll, a home furnishings multinational, bought the company in the 1980s. Royal Winton was purchased out by the management after Coloroll's financial bankruptcy. It was combined with Longton's Duchess China Ltd. (formerly part of the Tams group). Initials G B plus the Winton trade name were used from around C.1906.
