Victoria produced “penny inkwells” between 1880 and 1910. This is a group of ceramic "penny" inkwells, so named because they were subpar bottles that could be purchased for one cent each. They were one of the first "disposables" and were manufactured inadvertently, after they were empty, they were just thrown away. Because most “penny inkwells” that survived the nineteenth century are broken or chipped, this small collectible is exceedingly uncommon. Stoneware with a salt glaze makes up the ceramic. Depending on the combination of the initial clay colour and the final glaze, each inkwell has a unique colour that ranges from a light tan to a deep reddish brown. No two are alike! Schoolchildren used “penny inkwells” the most of the time, with occasional home use. Collectible “Penny Inkwell” is genuinely from Victorian Era.
