The Straub & Schweizer metal factory in Geislingen a der Steige, Germany, was founded in 1853 by mill owner Daniel Straub and the Schweizer brothers Louis and Friedrich. The company, initially known as Metallwarenfabrik Straub & Schweizer, joined with Ritter & Co in 1880, a high-end luxury goods manufacturer who was ahead of their time in silver plating technology. Rather than employing heat and mechanical pressure to plate their wares, Ritter immersed them in a silver bath, which when combined with an electric current resulted in pieces that were finely and evenly covered in a layer of silver. WMF began creating glass in 1883, when they erected a glass house in Geisslingen, near Stuttgart, to manufacture its own glass inserts. Karl Wiedmann, a young glass designer, established the method of iridized surfaces, and the "MYRA"- Kristall was born in 1926. The same year witnessed the birth of the first "IKORA" glass, which was allegedly discovered by mistake while attempting to fix a Myra glass piece. Both Myra and Ikora glass were produced until roughly 1936, when art glass production halted. WMF's focus on technology and design, on the other hand, allowed them to create unique items that were sought after by the newly wealthy middle classes. WMF cooperated with famous artists of the time to make the developing Jugendstil style accessible to the general public. WMF pieces are now highly sought after by collectors, and are widely regarded as the finest examples of the Art Nouveau style (Jugendstil in Germany and Secessionist in Austria).
