The largest Australian electronics producer, Astor - Radio Corporation - Electronic Industries, produced products for the retail market ranging from washing machines to radios. Arthur Warner formed Astor, which started producing electronics in Victoria in 1926. The company was unusual since it provided radios in vibrant designs and colours as opposed to the traditional designs provided by other companies. Eclipse and Essanay, rival companies, were acquired by Astor. It began as a partnership between renowned tobacconist Louis Abrahams and Sir Arthur Warner. The business went public in 1940, with the original partners owning 50% of the new company. However, the partners sold Pye Ltd. a majority stake in 1956, and Pye was later taken over by the enormous Philips electronics company in 1966. Needs attention. Wonderful restoration project for radio enthusiasts!
