Wileman & Co., which also traded as The Foley Potteries, was the previous name of Shelley Potteries, which is located in Staffordshire. In 1862, Joseph Ball Shelley became the company's first employee, and in 1896, his son Percy Shelley became the sole proprietor, and the company remained in the Shelley family until 1966, when it was purchased by Allied English Potteries. Although table ware was the main output, the company's china and earthenware items were numerous and varied. Art Nouveau pottery and Intarsio varieties produced by art director Frederick Alfred Rhead were immensely popular in the late Victorian period, but Shelley is arguably best known for its excellent bone china "Art Deco" ware of the interwar years and post-war stylish tea ware. Wileman refers to a backstamped variant of the porcelain that precedes Shelley's brand. Longton, Staffordshire, England was the location of the plant that produced this brand of porcelain.
