Wax resist fibre art is known as batik. It refers to a specific technique for imprinting coloured designs on fabric. This technique includes covering specific design elements with a material, typically liquid wax, so that the fabric beneath maintains its original colour while the material is coloured by the dyes. The term "batik" originates from Javanese culture. Ambtik is a word that means to mark with dots or spots. It can mean writing, painting, or drawing in a broader meaning. Since there is no term for it in the older Javanese language, batik must be a very new invention. An age-old craft that has been practised for countless years is batik. Countries like Indonesia, the Middle East, Thailand, Africa, Malaysia, India, China, the Philippines, and others all practise it. The exact origin of batik is not known, but it is widely common on the island of Java, Indonesia. It is thought that batik was only used by royal families and affluent people when it was initially practised in Java.
