Preston, who was born in 1875 and relocated to Melbourne in 1893, studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School of Arts under the instruction of painters Fredrick McCubbin and Bernard Hall, who was the school's director at the time. She visited Europe in 1904. Preston developed a "decorative" style at this period after being exposed to the works of artists like Matisse, van Gogh, Cézanne, Gauguin, and Whistler, as well as the influences of oriental aesthetics. Preston would use this style throughout the entirety of her career. Margaret Preston firmly supported a national style that was distinctive and expressive of Australian culture despite having travelled widely throughout Europe and Asia. Margaret Preston became one of Aboriginal art's most ardent supporters throughout the 1920s, when it garnered little attention from the general public, and up until her death in 1963. Her usage of Aboriginal symbols and symbolism has drawn a lot of attention and controversy.
