French landscape painter Antoine Bouvard is well known for using the alias Marc Aldine. Bouvard is still most recognised for his paintings of canal scenes in Venice, which are characterised by warm colours and a foggy light that frequently corresponds with the sun sinking. The French painter Félix Ziem, who was well-known for his lyrical portrayals of port cities and nautical scenery, had a significant effect on him. Born in St. Jean-de-Bournay, L'Isere, France, in 1870, Bouvard attended the Academy of Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he became friends with French architect Constant-Dufeux, who influenced both his artistic and professional path. In parallel with his painting work, he eventually rose to the position of director of architectural services for the Seine. Despite staying in Paris, the artist often travelled to Italy to paint Venice directly from observation; he prefered to sell his paintings through dealers rather than lead a public life. Noel Bouvard, his son, carried on his father's artistic legacy by studying landscape painting. In 1956, the elder Bouvard passed away.
