Dong Yuan was a Chinese artist. He was well-known for both figure and landscape paintings, and he personified the refined aesthetic that would dominate Chinese brush painting for the following nine centuries. The Jiangnan Landscape style, which originated with him and his student Juran, is a distinctive southern school of landscape painting. They made up the four important painters of the time, along with Jing Hao and Guan Tong of the Northern style. He studied the already-existing styles of Li Sixun and Wang Wei here because, like many artists in China, his line of work was as an official. He did, however, add to these masters' methods by incorporating a more nuanced viewpoint.
