James Dixon & Sons was founded in Sheffield, England, in 1806, and over the course of the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, it rose to become one of the leading manufacturers in Great Britain. Their electroplated Britannia metal, electroplated nickel silver (EPNS), pewterware, and silverware were particularly well-known. Their speciality was home furnishings, particularly tableware and cookware (such as knives, cutlery, and bowls) (mixers, cocktail shakers, tea services, toast racks, and more). Additionally, they were the top American manufacturer of shooting accessories in the 19th century. Last but not least, the company competed with J. Stevens & Son, T. Yates, and W. Dowler & Sons for a spot among the top four whistle producers. The initial location of James Dixon and Sons was conveniently on Sheffield's Silver Street. From 1806 until 1822, the family worked there before moving to Cornish Place and staying in the same city. The business was family-owned and operated until 1976. Later, a different Sheffield-based company acquired them and all of their distinctive patterns for sale. The trumpet and banner mark was introduced in 1879 to avoid ox fusion with Joseph Deakin & Sons. The mark JD & S was used from C.1920s.
