Lyonel Feininger was born in New York but spent most of his career there. He is well-known for his involvement with the Bauhaus and the German Expressionist movement. He was also an active teacher and practitioner there. Feininger's individual style, which is distinguished by angular lines and translucent intersecting planes, was greatly influenced by early Cubism and Futurism. Feininger returned to his native New York after the Nazi party disbanded the Bauhaus in the late 1930s, expanding his already extensive body of work with a number of skylines and seascapes.
