Master was born in 1895 in a village in Yixing County, Jiangsu Province. The boy's first teacher was his father, Xu Dazhang, an engraver and poet who taught drawing in a local school. He nurtured in his kid a passion of art and showed him the depth and originality of China's old culture. He was a deft connoisseur of ancient Chinese literature and painting and himself worked in the traditional style of "guohua." A young man who was idealistic and impressionable decided to carry on his father's legacy. Childhood years spent working closely with nature played a significant role in shaping Xu Beihong's personality. His portraits, landscapes, and animal paintings are well known both in the artist's native country and abroad. It is challenging to overstate the significance of Xu Beihong's personality in Chinese artistic life. Unlike many of his predecessors and even his contemporaries, he had an impact on the future of Chinese art in general as well as the development of any of the painting genres. His unrestrained, overwhelming energy continues to draw us in with his rebellious, seeking attitude, which is expressed in distinctive visual pictures.
