In 1948, George Aratani established Mikasa in the state of California as "American Commercial Corp." Over the following 20 years, Mikasa, which started out as a tableware importer, developed into a dinnerware distributor, supplying dinnerware to upscale retailers including Bloomingdale's, Macy's, May Department Stores Company, and Bloomingdale's. The American audience was first introduced to the brand name Mikasa in 1957. In the 1970s, Mikasa expanded its product offerings by adding crystal stemware, stainless steel flatware, crystal presents and picture frames, ceramic vases, tablecloths, and decorative accents to its already popular tableware lines. The corporate offices of Lifetime Brands are in Garden City, New York, and the company's distribution locations are in Robbinsville, New Jersey, and Rialto, California. Today Mikasa has ambitions to keep expanding its retail segment across the country in the years to come.
