Namatjira played a significant role in the advancement of Aboriginal rights and continues to be a remarkable presence in Australian art. He departed somewhat from the subject matter, colour scheme, and tonality of conventional Indigenous art. This was partly due to his ambition to paint using watercolours in a Western-influenced style while simultaneously emphasising the finer details of the vegetation and rock formations in the landscapes he depicted. But his creations can also be considered as expressions of holy knowledge and historical landmarks. We can see Namatjira responding individually to the panoramic as well as the intimate details of light, time of day, and seasonal change in his paintings, which could be seen as an Indigenous grasp of ecology and geology. His distinctive portrayals of gorges, mountains, and ghost gums have permeated Australian culture and consciousness over time.
